Can I Convert a Gas Log Fireplace to Wood Burning?

There is no way to convert a gas fireplace to burn wood, unless you are very lucky and the gas fireplace is an insert in a properly functioning solid fuel fireplace (in which case you basically just remove the insert, and have the fireplace inspected). In situations like this, you have a couple options. This option will require the least amount of work, though can still be quite expensive and time consuming. You will have to follow all local codes that deal with this type of project, but for this example we will use National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards (NFPA 211 Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances). You will need 36" clearance from combustible materials on all sides (top, left, right, front, and back). You will need a floor protector under the unit, that extends 18" in all directions (except up/down, that would just be silly). The floor protection requirements will be provided by the manufacturer, for listed stoves. For unlisted stoves, the floor protection requirements are determined by the length of the legs on the unit.Stove must be placed on non-combustible floor. 4" hollow masonry laid to provide air circulation through the layer, covered with 24-gauge sheet metal.Closely spaced masonry not less than 2", covered with 24-gauge sheet metal. There are ways to reduce the clearances, by installing special materials around the stove. Check your local codes for methods to reduce clearances. You will need 18" clearance around the stove pipe, as well as a stovepipe thimble where the stovepipe passes through walls/ceilings.If you do not have a proper masonry chimney to attach the stovepipe to, you will have to use a factory built metal (A. K. A. prefabricated, Class A, all-fuel) chimney. You likely wo not be able to use the same pipe used by the old gas fireplace. You also do not want to connect the stovepipe to the chimney used by your other gas appliances (furnace, water heater, etc. ). If you've got the cash and time, you could have a proper masonry chimney/fireplace built (or build it yourself). This option will require modifications to the building structure, lots of masonry skills, a healthy bank account, and a good bit of time

1. How to properly extend the TPR Pipe on a water heater

You can buy a replacement TPR drain tube for about $5 at any home improvement store. Simply unscrew the old drain line, measure and cut the new line, then screw the new line in place. You will need two wrenches, and some PTFE tape (or whatever your preferred pipe dope is). NOTE: This answer assumes a side discharge, threaded TPR valve.Technically, you cannot use SharkBite connectors on the temperature relief valve drain. Temperature relief valves can be set as high as 210F, while SharkBite connectors are only certified to 200F. However, your local building department may allow it, so check with them to see if it's acceptable

2. Cold feed through hot side of water heater?

TL;DR I think your setup is perfectly normal and functioning properlyThe description is a bit confusing, but I have a theory (and if it is wrong, someone who knows more than me, like a professional plumber, will come up with the correct explanation):Hot water can only come out of the tank if there is something else pushing out. In a normal setup, that is the cold water. But that does not work very well if you are trying to empty the tank. So the other possibility is air. But air needs a way to get into the tank, and normally the tank is airtight. This is what you tried first. Some hot water came out, but very slowly. That's because the vacuum created by draining some water out was only very slowly replaced by a little bit of air making its way back through the hot water faucets. When you did this, the cold water was now flowing back into the tank and immediately flowing out the hot line. That is to be expected, as that is how the hot water tank normally works! Except normally it is full of hot water and the cold water goes in one side, gets heated (unless you are using hot water faster than the tank can heat it up) and hot water comes out the other side. Since you had already drained some of the hot water, you got a mix of hot & cold and probably more mixed up than usual - and therefore relatively cold. If this was with the hot line detached then it makes sense. The tank would now be able to drain quickly because with an open hot line, air can get in easily, unlike the situation with the hot line connected over many feet of pipe (filled with water) going to the open faucets. Also normal. As long as the cutoff is between the "detached cold line" and the tank, there is no real difference whether that cold line is connected or not. So water continued to come out the hot side just fine.Actually, that happens normally inside the hot water tank

3. Is there a way to dissolve the mineral deposits in a water heater?

no Ron I see this alot ......you have to drain every year or so or you get this problem it is time to pony up and get a new one
