Heater Making Thumping Sounds?

If your outdoor unit runs when in heating then it sounds like you have a heat pump. It operates like a normal air conditioning unit, with the exception that it has a valve which reverses the flow of the refrigerant. By doing that it will extract any heat from outdoors and then release that transfer of heat to the inside of your apartment. In colder weather, the coil outside will ice up, which requires the unit to go into a defrost cycle. When that happens, there are electric heaters inside of your indoor fan section that will cycle on to continue heating your apartment while the unit is defrosting. They often have a sequencer of 3-4 stages to turn an element on and off in succession rather than all at once. Each time you see the AUX light blink it's probably a heater turning on or off. The clicking outside is the reversing valve solenoid going into and out of defrost. If you listen closely, you should hear a whoosh sound as well after the click. That's the sound of the valve changing positions in the outdoor unit. If my assumptions are correct then what you are hearing is perfectly normal, unless it happens too frequently. The defrost cycle should only occur every 30-45 minutes. If it's more often than that, there could be an issue with the defrost board, a temperature sensor, or even the correct amount of refrigerant in the system. That will require an HVAC tech to check your system.
