How to Fix an Engine Oil Leak

How to Fix an Engine Oil Leak

Before you can even think about fixing the problem, you have to figure out which part of the car is leaking. The engine, transmission, and power steering system all use different kinds of oil, and any of them could spring a leak. Occasionally, you can tell which part is leaking by catching it in the act, or based on the location of the oil stains. In most cases, though, things like skid plates, the frame, and other parts of the car get in the way, redirecting the drops and making it hard to see exactly where the oil is coming from. So, the best way to identify an oil leak is to look at the oil itself. • Leaking motor oil will be black or some shade of brown (unless you just had the oil changed, in which case it will be a lighter amber or yellow color). • Power steering fluid is relatively clear, at least when it's new. Note that the radiator can also leak coolant, which these days can come in many different colors. However, coolant is not oil. That means it wo not feel oily to the touch, and it will eventually evaporate and dry up. Of course, you can also tell what is leaking by checking the fluid levels. If your transmission fluid is low, you know that your transmission is leaking. If your power steering fluid is low, you will need to find and fix a power steering fluid leak. If your motor oil is low, there are actually two potential problems: either the engine is leaking oil, or it is burning oil. How do you know which one? Well, if you are seeing signs of an oil leak, and your transmission and power steering fluid levels are both full, then you know the leak is coming from the engine. But if either your transmission or power steering fluid levels are low, then they are likely the source of the leak, and your low engine oil is being caused by an oil burning problem. In that case, you will need to both fix the transmission/power steering leak, and stop your engine from burning oil.

2002 NISSAN MAXIMA OIL DIPSTICK PROBLEM?

checking the engine oil with vehicle on level ground surface for accurate readings. Because the dipstick usually enters the engine at an angle it is likely that one side will show higher then the other side. You would want to go with the lower reading. The nissan maxima V6 engines the dipsticks enter and travel threw the engine block from the head down till oil resorvoir.(instead of the normal dipstick tube to the oil pan seperate of the engine block). So this means oil can be sitting along the dipstick through out especially after running the car due to crankcase ventilation pressure as well as oil pressure(normal conditions). Even if the car has been allowed to sit the dipstick can and/or will have oil as you said as high as 6inches or so. TIP: After running engine or after traveling park on a level surface, with engine off pop the hood then pull out dipstick slightly and leave it like that to sit for maybe 20min. what this does is allows air or open venting so the oil may settle & return quicker if not better off the dipstick, and the block to the oil pan.(notice the rubber "O" Ring seal on the dipstick nearest the handle, be sure to lube this gasket as over time the heat, fumes and other chemicle can weaken the seal or cause it to stick=broken dipsticks often lost into the block.) 20min or so past you can Come back pull the dipstick completely out and wipe. now you can re-dip the dipstick be sure it goes completely in and pull out (be sure it does not touch anything causing faulty readings as it may have rubbed off.) Hold the dipstick level horizontally right after pulling check both sides. repeat 3-5 times if needed. HOPE THIS HELPS. I USUALLY GOT A GOOD VISUAL ACCURATE READING AFTER 2nd DIP & PULL USING TH PROCEDURE TIP I JUST SHARED.
