What Is the Difference Between the Face ID of Xiaomi 8 and Iphonex? Analysis of 3D Structured Light

Apple iPhone x is the first smartphone in the global mobile phone brand to use 3D speckle structured light for face recognition and payment. This technology comes from prime sense, which was wholly acquired by apple in Israel for us $345 million in 2013. This technology has attracted much attention since it first used 3D structured light for face recognition and payment in iPhone X.

On May 31, Xiaomi officially released the exploratory version of Xiaomi 8, which adopted face ID and claimed that it adopted 3D structured light face recognition technology, which is the first attempt of this technology on Android phones.

Different from the speckle structured light scheme of iPhone x, Xiaomi 8 exploratory face ID adopts the coded structured light based on mask, which is independently developed by Mantis vision, Israel. Mantis vision uses mask based coding structured light to obtain depth information through innovative patented coding technology. The method of speckle structured light is to make 30000 discrete infrared dot arrays for depth detection, while Mantis vision adopts coding method, and the face presents regular geometric coding graphics, which can quickly match feature points, reduce the amount of 3D information calculation and reduce the power consumption of structured light algorithm. In addition, with the high frame rate of the camera, real-time dynamic capture of 3D content can also be realized.

Face ID 3D structured light technology is different from other authentication technologies based on 2D information. Face 3D depth information is safer and more private. This technology carries the digitization of the real world, resulting in some application scenarios completely different from traditional two-dimensional imaging. It will have a wide application space in many fields in the future.

In addition to Xiaomi, oppo is also about to release a new machine that supports 3D structured light. Earlier, on May 21, oppo held a press conference on "3D structured light 5g". Subsequently, oppo will hold a press conference in the Louvre on June 19 to officially release the 3D structured light mobile phone find X.

China Merchants electronics expects that the official launch time of Xiaomi 8 exploration version and find x mobile phones will still wait until after July. Among them, oppo's find x stock volume is relatively sufficient, and there are multiple products with high and low configurations. The sales volume in the life cycle is expected to be 2 million units, and the official launch time is mid July.

In terms of supply chain, according to China Merchants electronics, compared with Xiaomi's choice of Mantis vision, oppo cooperated with Obi Zhongguang, and Huawei chose its own algorithm. As the sale is approaching, the suppliers of oppo and Xiaomi have been determined, while there is uncertainty at Huawei. At present, there are four module factories competing, among which Qiuti technology just sent samples in late May. In terms of progress, Guangbao and Oufei technology are in the lead.

Specific to the implementation principle of the structured light scheme, Xiaomi's structured light scheme is coded structured light, which does not need to adopt doe, and the lens only needs a plastic projection lens. The specific working principle is as follows: VCSEL laser uniformly irradiates the mask to form tens of thousands of bright and dark patterns, which are projected through the projection lens, and anti distortion processing is required in the projection process. Its advantage lies in its simple structure, but its disadvantage lies in its high power consumption.

The solution of apple, oppo and Huawei is speckle structured light. Its working principle is that VCSEL laser irradiates on the diffuser to form hundreds of scattered points, and then the beam is changed into vertical light through the collimating lens. The optical path design of the collimating lens is difficult. The vertical light hits DOE (diffractive optical element) and diffracts into tens of thousands of scattered points. The scheme is more mature, the structure is relatively complex, but the power consumption is low.

According to jiwei.com, Xiaomi 8 exploratory face ID adopts the 3dsensing module of Oufei technology. Oufei technology has delivered samples to several major Android customers, which can provide end customers with comprehensive facial recognition solutions with good user experience, with high gross profit margin.

In addition, Fang Jing also revealed that the Laya project of Huawei mate 20 will also adopt the structured light off screen fingerprint scheme. It is expected that the sale time will be in mid October, and the shipment volume will reach 1.4 million units in 2018. In addition to the above three, vivo is expected to launch mobile phones with post TOF scheme this year. The module factory is Xinli, the TOF sensor is Panasonic, and the driver chip and algorithm are provided by ADI.

At present, the domestic mobile phones equipped with 3D sensing are relatively limited in 2018. The penetration of 3D sensing in the mobile phone industry is still in the early stage, but there is a large potential space. In the future, driven by "hmov", Android mobile phone manufacturers will accelerate the introduction of face ID, and the industrial chain will benefit synchronously. As a new human-computer interaction mode, 3D sensing is worth looking forward to.
